Workaround for removing attachments in Mac OS X Lion Mail.app

Since Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” a bug in Apple Mail prevents you from removing attachments from certain messages, it most often affects sent messages and Mail also does not display the paperclip icon for them in the message list–as if they didn’t have any attachments.

I reported the bug to Apple in August 2011, as have many others, but they still haven’t fixed it. There are also many threads about the problem on Apple Discussions¹ and a simple workaround emerged from one of them:

Select all messages from which you want to remove attachments but Mail doesn’t allow you to do so. (It does not matter whether other messages without attachments are selected too.)
Along with them, select one message from which Mail allows you to remove attachments. (You can recognize such message by a paperclip icon the attachment column in the message list. You can create a special mailbox with several copies of such a message to always have it ready. As Mail allows you to select multiple mailboxes in the left mailbox column, you can select this one and the mailbox from which you can delete messages and then select messages from both in the message list.)
From the Message menu choose Remove Attachments (the menu item is now enabled).

Voilà: attachments removed. I’m glad that a workaround exists as people keep asking me about this and I keep explaining, that I cannot fix bugs for Apple.

If you have upgraded to Xcode 4.x and miss the possibility to create C/C++ implementation (.c or .cpp) and header (.h) files in one step as it used to be possible in Xcode 3.x, download these Xcode file template (for C and for C++), and place the expanded .xctemplate directories into your /Developer/Library/Xcode/Templates/File Templates/C and C++ directory.

That’s it. The template will show up as additional options when creating a C/C++ file. You don’t even have to restart Xcode.

Physalis peruviana: year 2

Two years ago I’ve bought a pack of extremely tasty and pricey dried berries sold as Incan Goldenberries. It’s hard to liken the taste to something else, but its both tart and sweet and with a little special something. As I’ve found out, the plant is called physalis peruviana, or cape gooseberry. The berries were full of small seeds. I’ve saved one berry, extracted a few seeds and planted them the next spring. Plants about a meter high remotely similar to tomato have grown from the seeds. There were only a few unripe fruits. I’ve dug it out in the autumn, kept it in the basement, and replanted it this spring.

I’ve had a first few ripe fruits. There will be less than ten of them in total, and they’re delicious. They taste like pure sunlight with a bit of tomato.

Pár slov česky: Tohle je část mé první úrody bobulí mochyně peruánské. Rostlinu jsem vypěstoval ze semínek koupených sušených bobulí (Incan Goldenberries, údajně jsou strašně zdravé, ale hlavně jsou strašně dobré) a přezimoval ve sklepě. Ještě nevím, co s ní udělám tuhle zimu. Po vytažení ze sklepa byla letos dost zmatená (částečné opadání listů, zaschnutí některých větví), ale bojím se, že venku by nepřežila.

Novopacké Gingers Beer: etiketa říká ne

Nedávno jsem měl docela dobré novopacké tmavé pivo v Zavěšenym kafi. Když jsem pak uviděl jejich “zázvorové pivo”, navíc ověnčené zlatým kurzívním nápisem “Exclusive” na pivním stánku na říčanských trzích, zajásal jsem.

Ale předčasně. Jedná se o světlé pivo dochucené éčky, které zázvor nevidělo ani z dálky. Už po otevření lahve se na mě vylinulo aroma ne nepodobné skandinávským plechovkovým “ciderům”: chemická limonáda. Zázvorové aroma je cítit poměrně slabě (ve srovnání se silnými, byť nealkoholickými ginger beers, která jsou opravdu ze zázvoru; u nás je k sehnání třeba Fiery Ginger Beer v Marks&Spencer). Silná je naopak univerzálně-žvýkačkovo-limonádová kombinace a vůně umělých sladidel a přírodně identických aromat. V pozadí je cítit nahořklá chuť něčeho, co by sám o sobě asi byl příjemný ležák: jedině díky tomu je mok jakž takž pitelný. Kdybych se byl podíval na etiketu vzadu, mohl jsem si zbytečný nákup ušetřit:

Zřejmě se jedná o toto pivo v inovované lahvi, mimochodem bůhvíproč nevratné. Na stránkách pivovaru Nová Paka výrobek vůbec nefiguruje. Doufám, že to znamená, že ho vypustili ze sortimentu.
